Lower seeds continue upset bug at USTA Van Der Meer Southern Winter Closed tennis tournament

sports@islandpacket.comJanuary 21, 2014

If a No.1 seed makes it through to the championship round of the USTA Van Der Meer Southern Winter Closed tournament, it's going to have to be in Boys 18 doubles.

Fifth-seeded Amy Yang defeated top-seeded Kenya Jones, 0-6, 6-4, 6-3, on Monday in the Girls 18 semifinal round, meaning both singles finals will be without a top seed.

The top seeded Girls 18 doubles team is out, as well, leaving just the boys duo of Michael Kay and Trey Yates, who survived a tough 9-8 (6) win over fifth-seeded Christian Garay and Jonathan O'Neal in the quarterfinals.

As for the singles brackets, Tuesday's finals are set.

On the boys side, a pair of upsets in the semifinals have put fifth-seeded Walker Duncan and 17th-seeded Jess Jones in the championship.

After a 6-2, 6-4 win over Emil Reinberg in the quarterfinals, Jones defeated third-seeded Mcclain Kessler 6-3, 6-2 in their semifinal. The fifth-seeded Duncan followed a 6-4, 6-4 win over ninth-seeded Andy Martines in the quarterfinals with a rather easy 6-3, 6-0 win over second-seeded Robert Kelly in the semifinals.

For the girls, Yang will face second-seeded Andie Daniell, who easily handled Jacqueline Carr 6-1, 6-1, in the quarterfinals before toughing out a 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 win over fifth-seeded Allison Miller in the semifinals.

The Boys 18 and Girls 18 singles finals are at 11 a.m. at Van Der Meer Shipyard Resort.
