Quarterfinals ahead at USTA Van Der Meer Southern Winter Closed tennis tournament on Hilton Head Island

sports@islandpacket.comJanuary 20, 2014

Any chance of a local winner in the Boys 18 Singles draw of the USTA Van Der Meer Southern Winter Closed tournament on Hilton Head Island disappeared Sunday when Hilton Head Christian Academy standout and Clemson commitment Hampton Drake retired with an injury.

Drake, who moved from junior tournaments to ATP Futures earlier this year, was the only local product in the Boys 18 Round of 16, courtesy of a 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 morning upset of fourth-seeded Korey Lovett. But the 17th-seeded Drake was forced to retire just three games into his match with ninth-seeded Andy Martinez.

Trey Yates, the overall top seed, fell 6-4, 0-6, 7-6 (6) to 17th-seeded Emil Reinberg in the Round of 32. Reinberg later moved on to the quarterfinals with another upset, this time a 6-4, 6-1 win over ninth-seeded Daniel Yun.

On the girls side, the top two seeds advanced to the quarterfinals.

Top-seeded Kenya Jones earned wins over Laura Dean (6-4, 6-4) and Clare Raley (6-1, 6-4), while second-seeded Andie Daniell downed Amanda Rebol (6-1, 6-0) and Olivia Lucas (7-5, 6-1).

Play continues Monday.
