Nathan Day thought he was being the fair host.

The Battery Creek High School wrestling coach used a blind draw to select the bracket for the fifth annual Coach Trap Memorial Wrestling Tournament at Battery Creek. Nineteen teams committed to compete, and Battery Creek drew one of the best in the state, facing Class 4-A power Lexington on Friday in the opening round.

The host Dolphins lost 52-27, dropping to Saturday's consolation bracket. The Wildcats forfeited their heaviest three bouts.

Battery Creek will face Colleton County at 10 a.m. Saturday

"Hopefully we'll compete a little tomorrow when we're overmatched," Day said. "Tonight, some of the matches we didn't compete when the other guy was better than us. We didn't fight as hard as we'd like to see."

None of the four participating Beaufort County teams survived past the quarterfinals.

Beaufort High School defeated Richmond Hill and Stratford before falling 42-23 to region rival Summerville in the quarters. The match was a rematch of Wednesday's Region 8-AAAA match, also won by the Green Wave, who are the No. 2 team in Class 4-A.

Like Wednesday's match, Eagles coach Bill Damude was pleased with the quality of his team's wrestling.

"I just wanted them to go hard," Damude said. "You guys can compete with one of the best teams in the state, I think you can go with anybody."

Hilton Head Island High School dropped Whale Branch Early College High School, 76-3. The Seahawks then lost to West-Oak, 48-19.

Hilton Head High wrestlers Logan Johnston (106), Matt Levy (126), Brock Massey (138), Jose Gomez (145) and Martin Duane (182) finished 2-0 on the day.

Seahawks coach Mike Newton said he was pleased with his team's effort but that technique kept Hilton Head High from advancing.

"You make mistakes against a better team, they make you pay," Newton said. "I'm looking forward to tomorrow. Hopefully we wrestle tomorrow like we did today. We wrestled really well."

Day counted four or five bouts he thought the Dolphins could claim from Lexington.

Battery Creek's Omar Daniels started with a pin at 106, and Brian LaBean earned a decision at 138. But that was it for the Dolphins' scoring before the forfeits.

The Wildcats entered as the No. 3 team in Class 4-A and Battery Creek the top-ranked team in Class 2-A/1-A. The consensus from the beginning was that Summerville and Lexington would meet in Saturday's championship.

LaBean acknowledged Battery Creek's tough draw but said the Dolphins had to embrace it.

"To me it's just go big or go home," he said. "You're going to have to beat somebody sometime. You can't just pick on the little small teams."
