A homeowner was taken by ambulance to Beaufort Memorial Hospital on Friday night after a fire broke out at her home in the Lakeview Mobile Home Park in Burton.

The fire broke out about 7:30 p.m.. It appeared to have began on the porch, Burton Fire District Battalion Chief Matt Maichel said.

The cause was unknown and under investigation by the Beaufort County Fire Scene Investigation Team, he said.

The fire was reported by several neighbors, firefighters said. The homeowner and neighbors attempted to put out the flames, Maichel said.

Several dogs escaped the home unharmed. The woman was walking and talking when transported to the hospital, Maichel said. He did not know the extent of her injuries or condition. Firefighters said she was looking for her dogs when they arrived.

The porch, entry way and living room sustained the brunt of damage from the flames, he said. The remainder of the home had significant smoke damage, he said.

Also assisting on scene were Sheldon Fire District, Beaufort County EMS and the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.
