A 35-year-old Beaufort man arrested in a drug investigation Thursday also was charged with assaulting his ex-girlfriend in November, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.

James Odom was a passenger in a car on Ajuga Drive in Beaufort about 1:30 a.m. Nov. 24, when the driver pulled alongside four women, including Odom's 28-year-old ex-girlfriend, Sgt. Robin McIntosh said. Odom got out of the black Dodge Challenger with a gun in his hand, McIntosh said.

The ex-girlfriend was struck in the back of her head with what she believed to be the gun, she told officers. Odom began to punch her, tried to undress her and handed the gun to the car's driver, McIntosh said.

When he could not force her into the car, Odom allegedly began to drag her down the road.

Odom continued hitting her as the car followed closely, McIntosh said. At one point, the driver got out and tried to stop the assault, but he was unsuccessful. Odom asked to have the gun back, but the driver refused and left, according to McIntosh.

The assault lasted for about 30 minutes, until the woman was able to get into the back of a friend's car and they drove away, the victim told officers.

Odom was arrested Thursday after the Sheriff's Office Drug Investigations Section searched a home on Beeburst Lane for suspected drug activity, according to a news release.

Investigators seized 1,268 grams of marijuana, less than one gram of cocaine, 17 hydrocodone pills, three guns, $665 cash and drug paraphernalia, the release said.

Odom was charged with kidnapping, criminal domestic violence of a high and aggravated nature, possession of a firearm during a violent crime, unlawful carrying of a pistol, possession of cocaine, possession of a firearm by a felon, possession of a stolen firearm, possession of a controlled substance and possession with intent to distribute marijuana.

He was at the Beaufort County Detention Center on Friday, with bond set at $105,000.

Deputies also arrested 26-year-old Lorenzo Rivers of Beaufort at the home on charges of possession of a controlled substance, simple possession of cocaine and possession of a stolen firearm.

Rivers was at the detention center Friday, with bond set at $25,000.
