Battery Creek sweeps Burke in basketball

If the memory was still fresh from five days before, the Battery Creek boys basketball team didn't let it show.

The Dolphins, who led a big second-half lead slip away to rival Whale Branch Early College High School less than a week ago, had a moderate lead disappear Thursday by the end of the third quarter against Burke.

But Battery Creek finished strong, defeating the Bulldogs 63-61 at home in the Palace to remain undefeated in region play.

Eric Freeman made the go-ahead basket during the fourth quarter, and Yuneek Crittendon added a free throw for insurance with 11.2 seconds remaining.

The Bulldogs missed their attempt to tie but called timeout with 4.8 seconds after grabbing the offensive rebound. Their final attempt came awkwardly from behind the basket, and Battery Creek survived to improve to 6-0 in Region 6-AA.

"It kind of helped us out a little bit, especially the way we lost a tough one the other night," said Battery Creek coach Antoine Youmans, whose team improved to 11-4 overall. "We needed a close one like this. This win is definitely going to help us. It wasn't pretty, but we'll take it."

Devonte Wilson led the Dolphins with 16 points and seven rebounds. Christian Brown added nine points for Battery Creek.

The Dolphins led by eight during the third quarter before Burke fought back to tie it at 47 entering the fourth quarter.

The Bulldogs were up four with under two minutes, but Battery Creek used its press to force turnovers and grab the lead away.

Youmans said he often reminds his players basketball is a game of runs and not to let one bury them.

"The guys did a good job of keeping their head up and listening to directives, causing turnovers and knowing there is still a chance to win," he said.

Battery Creek girls 79, Burke 21: Daisja Cannon scored 30 points to lead the host Dolphins to another Region 6-AA victory. Cannon added seven rebounds and eight steals for Battery Creek, which improved to 11-4 and 5-1 in region.

Deja Moultrie contributed 26 points during the rout. Brianna Tolbert scored 11 points, pulled down five rebounds and had five steals. Maty Dearsman scored seven points and matched with seven rebounds.

And Dolphins post player Ericka Alston grabbed 10 rebounds and blocked four shots to go with her five points.
