Retirement complex reports jewelry thefts

Several residents of a Hilton Head Island retirement community say jewelry and other items have been stolen from them in recent months, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff's Office report.

Three women told deputies Monday that jewelry worth a total of $8,000 had gone missing from their units at Emeritus at Hawthorne Inn, the report said. Each victim said they first reported the thefts to the complex's managers.

No suspects have been identified, and deputies do not know whether the thefts are related, Sgt. Robin McIntosh said.

The complex is conducting its own investigation, though "there is nothing to indicate any staff member was involved," said Emeritus at Hawthorne Inn executive director Peter Marshall. The complex conducts criminal background checks on all employees before they are hired, he said.
