Goodbye, recession; hello, retirement

info@islandpacket.comJanuary 16, 2014

Everyone is arguing over whether the new unemployment numbers are truly accurate. Part of the concern is the number of Americans apparently walking away from the workforce.

As I am of the age where my wife and I are looking forward to retirement in a few years, I can tell you with confidence that one of the major reasons why folks are walking away from the workforce is because we can finally afford retirement. Many of us have had to stay in or re-enter the workforce just to get by.

Now that our 401(k)s, etc., have made a substantial recovery, and our home values have made a recovery, our homes can be sold. We can move to new destinations, settle into retirement and take our pensions, etc.

The American Dream might just still exist.
