Dreher Blue Devil Invitational: The Beaufort High School wrestling team finished second and Bluffton took third Saturday in the Dreher Blue Devil Invitational in Columbia.

Hillcrest, ranked fifth in Class 4-A, was the champion of the 31-team tournament.

Beaufort High crowned one individual champion, and placed four more wrestlers in the top three. Jake Sharp, ranked fourth in Class 4-A, won the 113-pound title.

William Spann (120), Eric Blakely (182) and Kentrell Seabrook (285) all finished runner-up for the Eagles, while Mitch Nestler (195) took third.

"We put together a good tournament this weekend," Beaufort coach Bill Damude said. "We wrestled hard and with intensity, which was good to see."

Bluffton also brought home one champion, 138-pounder Talon Seitz. Seitz, a sophomore, recently moved to No. 1 in the state's Class 4-A rankings.

Bluffton also had three wrestlers finish third: Levi Joly (113), Lloyd Williams (126) and Mike Meyerink (160)

Beaufort will be back on the mats Monday, wrestling a tri-match at St. John's. Bluffton hosts Fort Dorchester in a Region 8-AAAA match at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Hilton Head Island High: Matt Levy won the 120-pound championship, helping the Seahawks finish 10th out of 18 teams at the Greenwood Invitational.

Emerald was the tournament champion.

Levy, who defeated Crescent's Johnnie Donald by major decision in the final, was one of five Hilton Head wrestlers to place. Brock Massey (132) and Martin Duane (182) finished runner-up, Chance Bentzoni (113) took fourth place, and Mark Entrup (138) was sixth.

The Seahawks will be back in action Friday and Saturday at Battery Creek's Coach Trap Duals.

Battery Creek: The Dolphins finished third at Indian Land's Warrior Duals, winning four matches and dropping two in the 12-team tournament.

West-Oak finished first and Piedmont (N.C.) was second. Those were the only teams to defeat Battery Creek (26-11). The Dolphins defeated Anson County, Vance, Clover and Lewisville.

Joseph Cuevas (113 pounds) and Omar Daniels (106) both went 5-0 on the day. Isaiah Sloan (195) returned to the lineup and went 4-1. Turhon White, Caleb Weaver and Brian Labean all went 3-1.

The Dolphins wrestle a tri-match Tuesday at North Charleston.


Porter-Gaud 79, Hilton Head Prep 54: The Dolphins couldn't overcome a record-setting performance by Porter-Gaud's K.J. James, falling to 1-2 in the region.

James scored 44 points -- setting a school record -- to help the Cyclones pull away from Prep (8-3). James had 10 in the fourth quarter after Prep had cut the deficit to eight points late in the third.

Prep had three starters foul out, and lost another one -- Noah Sulek -- to injury during the game.

John Eck finished with 17 points and four rebounds for the Dolphins, and Brennan Mikell and Randy Young each had 13 points and four boards.

The Dolphins return home to take on Hilton Head Christian on Tuesday.

Hilton Head Christian Academy 64, Cathedral Academy 49: Brad Meccariello and Mike Dillon scored 15 points apiece to lead the Eagles to victory in Charleston.

Chris Edwards added 11 points for Hilton Head Christian (3-4), which hosts Beaufort Academy on Monday.

Porter-Gaud 65, Hilton Head Christian Academy 43 (Friday): Brad Meccariello scored 11 points as the Eagles dropped their region opener.

K.J. James scored 17 points for Porter-Gaud.


Hilton Head Christian Academy 47, Ashley Hall 32: The Eagles moved to 7-0 overall and 2-0 in the region with another win in Charleston.

Ziaira Doe led Hilton Head Christian with 14 points. Hannah Reynolds added eight points, Macee Tamminen scored seven, Monica Bundy and Francesca Guidobono each had six for the Eagles, who host Beaufort Academy on Monday.

Aliyah Simmons had 11 points for Ashley Hall.

Porter-Gaud 45, Hilton Head Prep 24: All 10 players on the Porter-Gaud roster scored in a win over the visiting Dolphins.

Kendall Smith led Hilton Head Prep with 12 points.

The Dolphins (3-8, 0-3 SCISAA Region 3-AA) next host Hilton Head Christian on Tuesday.
