Speed limit raised on dangerous road

info@islandpacket.comJanuary 11, 2014

I just read the front page article on the raising of the speed limit to 60 mph on S.C. 170 from Snake Road to the Broad River Bridge. I was shocked. The intersection of 170 and Snake Road is one of the most dangerous intersections in Beaufort County.

There have been many accidents caused by trucks and cars that run the traffic light. For Spring Island, Chechessee Creek and Callawasee residents, this intersection has produced multiple accidents and many near misses.

My wife and I were victims of a critical accident on July 4 when an 18-wheel truck ran the light and totaled our Chevy Avalanche. I was seriously injured and months later, I am still dealing with the physical effects from the accident.

I wish the Department of Transportation had studied the accident reports and history of this intersection. If anything, we need people to slow down as they approach the intersection, not speed up. I pray that no one else will be injured or killed as a result of this ill-informed decision.
