Ribaut Road lane closes for water line repair

One northbound lane of Ribaut Road in Beaufort is closed as crews make emergency repairs to a leaking water line near the 700 block.

Repair work will likely continue into Friday evening, according to Joe Devito, field operations director for the Beaufort-Jasper Water and Sewer Authority.

Based on the volume of water leaking through the road, Devito said it is not expected that water will need to be turned off. If the water does need to be turned off, crews will inform those affected by knocking on doors.

Devito said the leak was "absolutely from the cold weather," which caused the old 6-inch iron pipe to crack.

Crews are using a high tech device to listen for a telltale hissing sound to locate the break.

The water line runs from Bay Street to the Technical College of the Lowcountry.

Because the asphalt on the portion of the road over the water line is thick, Devito said reaching it will take some time.

After crews repair the crack, they will place a metal plate over the area.

Crews will return in 3 to 5 days to repair the road, Devito said.

The BJWSA urges drivers to use caution around the repair zone.
