Runway extension is hurting, not helping

info@islandpacket.comJanuary 7, 2014

What a shame to read on the front page of the newspaper Sunday that business owners are being forced to relocate because of the runway extension project at Hilton Head Island Airport.

I thought this was America, land of the free, home of the brave.

Not. It's the land of the rich, and the rest are out of luck.

Beaufort County's latest fiasco on extending the runway has taken a turn for the worst. Now, they are bullying people, strong-arming them into something they don't want to do. Do any of us living on the island feel safe from these puppets to the fat cats?

Why do this? There's an international airport less than 30 minutes away. Charleston Airport, with Southwest Airlines, is 70 miles away. Jacksonville, with its three-lane I-95, is two hours away. All have direct flights, which, I'm sure, we all have traveled to save a few bucks.

I don't remember voting on a runway extension project, do you? Every statistic that says there would be no benefit to extending the runway has been overruled.

So what's next? A cruise ship port in Harbour Town? A boardwalk with games and rides along the ocean? Well, they are planning a boardwalk.

So when you see me riding my horse through your plantation yelling, "The British are coming, the British are coming," you'll know that you're next.
