Jasper superintendent doing good work

info@islandpacket.comJanuary 5, 2014

The recent editorial regarding Jasper County schools and its superintendent makes a one-sided complaint. I believe Dr. Vashti Washington continues to shine as a beacon in putting our children first in education.

She is joined by committed teachers, administrators, and parents.

In 2012, First Presbyterian Church of Hilton Head Island began a partnership with the Jasper County School system, with special emphasis on Ridgeland Elementary School. Washington led this effort on behalf of the children of Jasper County. More than 1,000 books were provided to enhance the school library and, in turn, the reading capabilities of the children.

Mentors and tutors come from Beaufort County to assist in reading development. The current "bookinators" project combines members of Hilton Head Island book clubs with Jasper County children. The two groups share stories about their reading programs.

And The Backpack Buddies program has recently been launched, It provides Jasper County children with supplementary nutritional foods on the weekends.

All of this is done under the watchful and loving eyes of Washington. Let her continue to do her good work to improve opportunities for all the Jasper County children.

As she so often says, "It's all about the children." Those of us who have worked with her and know her heart will continue to work for the children of Jasper County.
