BASKETBALL

HOOP SHOOT CONTEST: What: Bluffton Elks Lodge annual national free-throw shooting contest; Who: Children ages 8-13; When: Noon, Jan. 12; Where: Bluffton Boys and Girls Club; Notes: Three age divisions for boys and girls. Awards for division winners and runners-up. Winners advance to district competition in Charleston. Contestants must have valid birth certificate. YOUTH WINTER BASKETBALL LEAGUE: Who: Boys, ages 6-16; When: Games begin Jan. 10; Where: Hilton Head Island Recreation Center; Cost: $85 (includes jersey, team picture); Registration deadline: Nov. 25; Notes: All players ages 8-16 must attend placement on Nov. 16 -- Boys 8-9 from 9-10 a.m., Boys 10-11 from 11 a.m. to noon, Boys 12-13 from 1-2 p.m., Boys 14-16 from 2-3 p.m. Registration/Information: Go to www.islandreccenter.org, stop by the Island Rec Center at 20 Wilborn Rd. or call 681-7273.

BEAUFORT COUNTY PALS

PALS AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM: What: Registration for Beaufort County Parks and Leisure Services After-School Program; Where: Bluffton center, Burton Wells, Broomfield, Port Royal, Scott Center and Lind Brown; Notes: Registrations will be accepted until each center is full. Registration: Online at www.bcgov.net/PALS, or at the Burton Wells Recreation Center in Beaufort or the Buckwalter Recreation Center in Bluffton; Information: Call 255-6680 in Beaufort or 255-6710 in Bluffton.

GOLF

LPGA-USGA GIRLS GOLF OPEN HOUSE: What: Open house session for developmental junior golf program; Who: Girls ages 7-17; When: 3-5 p.m., Jan 12; Where: Rose Hill Golf Club, Bluffton; Notes: Open house will introduce girls to golf instruction that will be available during an upcoming LPGA-USGA Girls Golf session. Program is directed by Dr. Jean Harris and Krista Dunton. Cost for six-month session is $75, and scholarships are available based on need. MISCELLANEOUS

BEFORE-SCHOOL AND AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAMS: When: Monday through Friday (regularly scheduled public school days); Where: Hilton Head Island Recreation Center; Notes: Programs combine play with academics. Children in the afterschool program receive homework assistance. Programs focus on youth development, academic success, friendship and character-building. Before-school program children will be walked over to school. There is a registration fee of $30 per child or $50 per family each year. Completed registration forms must be turned in to Rec Center before your child can attend the program. Financial assistance is available to those in need. RUNNING

RESOLUTION RUN/WALK 5K: What: Third annual event to benefit LowCountry Habitat for Humanity; Where: Marina Drive, Dataw Island; When: 10 a.m., Jan. 18; Cost: $25 per person; Notes: Flat course for runners, walkers or strollers. Awards will be given to top 3 finishers in eight categories. Registration: www.lowcountryhabitat.org; Information: Call Habitat at 522-3500 or email info@lowcountryhabitat.org.

HILTON HEAD MARATHON: What: Hilton Head Island Marathon, Half Marathon and 5K; When: 8 a.m. Feb. 8; Where: Jarvis Creek Park, Hilton Head Island; Notes: The inaugural marathon and 12th annual half marathon will take runners over the Cross Island bridge. Both the marathon and half marathon will feature all standard male and female divisions. The event also will feature a 5K, children's fun run, and post-race party with live music, vendors and a craft beer garden. The event is limited to a total of 2,500 participants. SWIMMING

PRIVATE SWIM LESSONS: Who: Ages 3 & Up; When: 5:45-6:15 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays, Nov. 12-21; Where: Hilton Head Island Rec Center; Cost: $135; Notes: Scholarships available. FALL TIGER SHARKS SWIM TEAM: What: Wardle Family YMCA fall sports registration; When: Season began Sept. 23; Note: Financial assistance is available for those who meet the criteria. TENNIS

VOLLEYBALL
