Conflicting stories in Beaufort assault case

One man said an acquaintance cut him Friday in a store parking lot, while the acquaintance said he was knocked to the ground and pulled a pocket knife in self-defense, according to a Beaufort Police Department report.

The man who was cut told police he was walking through the parking lot on Sea Island Parkway when he was approached by an acquaintance who attacked him with a pocket knife, cutting his right arm, Cpl. Hope Able said. The injured man said he only defended himself.

The acquaintance, however, told police he was knocked to the ground and was being hit with a stick when he pulled the knife from his pants and swung it, Able said. He said he was unable to defend himself while he was knocked to the ground.

An investigation into the case continues, Able said.
