Rally set for Columbia says 'enough is enough'

info@islandpacket.comDecember 29, 2013

The number of South Carolinians who'll die unnecessarily in 2014 because our state government has refused to accept more than $1 billion in Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) Medicaid expansion funds is 1,319, according to estimates provided by S.C. Progressive Network.

In Beaufort County, 8,463 people will be affected. But 2,649 of them will be eligible to receive subsidized coverage through the federal insurance marketplace.

Unfortunately, 5,814 other local residents will fall through the cracks because they don't earn enough to qualify for a federal subsidy.

Those of us who have declared that "enough is enough" are joining the S.C. Progressive Network in holding a "Truthful Tuesday" rally at the S.C. Statehouse on Jan. 14 to call attention to the need to expand Medicaid coverage statewide, increase funding for public schools and protect minority voting rights.

Thanks to the generosity of American Federation of Government Employees Local 1951 president Sue Partridge and her members, and Sun City Democratic Club President Paul Russo and his members, chartered buses will be available to the Columbia rally. Seating is limited, and reservations must be made before Jan. 6 by contacting Partridge at 843-522-1513, Russo at 843-705-2674, or me at 843-597-2482.

Please join us in letting it be known that human lives can't be used as poker chips in the Republican Party's high stakes game of trying to defeat every positive program proposed by the Obama administration.
