A man claiming to have a gun in his pocket robbed a Hilton Head Island hotel Thursday, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff's Office news release.

Just after 6 a.m. Thursday morning a black male entered the employees' office of the Metropolitan Hotel and ordered the clerk to give him money, the release said. The man did not show the clerk a weapon, but the clerk did see a mass in the man's pocket that she thought was a gun.

The clerk gave the suspect a small sum of money from the cash register, the release said, and the man took a hotel laptop valued at $600 before running from the hotel.

The suspect is described as a black male, 32-40 years old, about 5-foot-10-inches in height and weighing 150 pounds. The suspect was wearing sagging black sweat pants with cargo pockets, a black top and a black skull cap, according to the release.

The Sheriff's Office established a perimeter following the robbery and K-9 units conducted an unsuccessful criminal track, the release said.

The robbery is under investigation by the Southern Investigations Section of the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.

Those with information are asked to call Crimestoppers at 1-888-274-6372.
