Spring Island home destroyed by fire early Thursday

Fire destroyed a home in a gated Okatie community early Thursday.

An expansive home at 6 Waterfall Lane on Spring Island was engulfed when Bluffton Township Fire District firefighters arrived at about 2:45 a.m., district spokesman Randy Hunter said. Homeowner Bill Allin and his wife were home when the fire began, but they were able to leave without injury, Fire Marshal Dan Wiltse said.

A detached three-car garage and guesthouse were not damaged, but all that remained of the main house Thursday morning were three chimneys, several cement supports and debris.

Crews were still working to extinguish flames at about 11 a.m

"There's so much damage and so much debris, we're just now trying to get into the hidden fires," Hunter said about 9 a.m. "It's going to be smoldering for a long, long time."

Wiltse said the home did not have a sprinkler system, and he did not know if its smoke detectors were working.

A damage estimate and cause of the fire will not be available until the S.C. State Law Enforcement Division completes an investigation of the incident, Wiltse said.

The market value of the 6.83-acre property was nearly $2.9 million, according to county records.

Another Spring Island home was damaged in a fire last Christmas.

The Bluffton Township Fire District was called to a home on Little Neck Crossing just as a couple prepared for their Christmas dinner. Nobody was injured and firefighters were able to contain the blaze, which seemed to start in the chimney.
