Monty Jett reaches important milestone

info@islandpacket.comDecember 26, 2013

Radio deejay and personality Monty Jett is beginning his 50th year of radio broadcasting. Monty is from Denmark, S.C., and made his debut on the radio at age 15 in nearby Bamberg. He moved to the Hilton Head Island/Bluffton area more than 25 years ago.

I began listening to Monty in 1987. He was working with a new radio station on Hilton Head called JOY. I stopped by the station to say hi and let them know that I really liked their music format. A young man was at the desk and I told him that I really appreciated hearing Barry Manilow, Elton John, Karen Carpenter and all of the good musicians, even the King, Elvis.

I was about to leave and then remembered to tell him that I really stopped to say that the morning guy, Monty Jett, had the most wonderful radio voice that I had ever heard. He then put out his hand and said, "I am Monty Jett." That was the start of a wonderful, 26-year friendship.

Monty begins his radio journey each morning at 6 a.m., now on 1130 AM and 93.5 FM. He still talks to the world's No. 1 fisherman, Captain Fuzzy Davis, each morning, which he has been doing for more than 20 years.

He is a really neat guy who helps many organizations in Bluffton and Hilton Head.

Congratulations on your 50 years, Monty, and I wish you many more to come.
