Main Street Youth Theatre needs support

info@islandpacket.comDecember 22, 2013

The Main Street Youth Theatre (MSYT) has taught skills, brought confidence and built self-esteem for youth in the Hilton Head/Bluffton area since 1996. As a nonprofit organization, MSYT operates with limited funding and no paid staff.

MSYT has worked hard to receive funding from various sources including local grantors and the Town of Hilton Head Island's hospitality tax proceeds. All of these sources have either declined funding or significantly reduced the funds from past amounts received. Some grantors claim to no longer support arts groups or say they are now focusing on other issues such as hunger and homelessness. These are certainly needed efforts, but where is the concern for the growth and development of our youth?

Performing arts is vital in any community. MSYT has all local participants in its productions. This is a small community lacking a variety of activities for our youth, especially middle and high school youth. We need more things to interest our youth and help them grow and develop into productive adults.

I challenge anyone to speak to any youth that has participated in performing arts for several years. You will see confidence, a high-level of speaking ability and presence in front of groups and knowledge about music and Broadway shows. MSYT is not only an arts group but an educational and growth opportunity for youth.

Help keep MSYT open and running in our community. Give a gift this holiday season to MSYT P.O.Box 5254, HHI, SC 29938.
