Beaufort High boys bounce back from earlier loss to Battery Creek

At 8:30 a.m. the Saturday morning after the Beaufort High School boys basketball team lost at Battery Creek High School, Kendrick Colvin began shooting.

The Beaufort High senior shot for almost three hours, hundreds of shots, even with another game that evening. His frustration was shared by the rest of the team.

After the Eagles' first loss of the season, coach Bruce Beasley told them practice habits needed to change. He wanted them more serious. More consistent.

With another shot at its rival Saturday and a friendly home crowd, Beaufort High responded with a 63-46 victory.

"We needed a loss," Colvin said. "We didn't like it, but we needed it. Because it made us finally realize we can't play at practice."

So what else changed in a week?

Beasley thought the Eagles were more patient against the Battery Creek zone. After settling for 3-pointers at Battery Creek, Beaufort High worked the ball around to find the best shot and muscled inside when needed.

Much of the physicality came from Carlton Johnson, who played for the first time this season after sitting out the first six games. Johnson scored 13 points in his debut.

"Carlton can do so many things," Beasley said. "And he gives us that inside muscle and that inside toughness that we need. And the other players feed off it."

Battery Creek closed a stretch of four tough games that included Beaufort High twice, at top-10 ranked Garrett Academy Tech to open the Region 6-AA schedule and a home game with talented Ridgeland-Hardeeville.

"I feel like we were lucky to come out 3-1 with those caliber teams on that stretch," coach Antoine Youmans said. "I think that's a plus."

The Dolphins appeared ready to hang around Saturday, but Beaufort High used runs at the end of the first half and third quarter to create enough separation.

Youmans thought Beaufort High's man defense effectively kept the Dolphins from what they wanted to do. Beasley agreed.

"We had to match their physicality and their scrappiness," Beasley said. "And I think we did that tonight."

Maybe games on consecutive nights contributed to Battery Creek's slow start. Maybe the Dolphins were just off.

But at halftime, teammates got after each other. And the Dolphins snapped out of their funk fast.

Daisja Cannon scored 22 of her 24 points the final two quarters, including four 3-pointers during a torrid stretch of the third quarter. Battery Creek avoided the upset to sweep its rival on the road.

"I just was out of my game, I guess," Cannon said. "We got in the locker room and started getting hype with each other, just encouraging each other. I think we just needed that encouragement."

Battery Creek led only 20-17 at halftime after having won handily at home on Dec. 13. But Cannon drilled her first 3 from the top of the key at the 5:13 mark of the third quarter and scored nine consecutive points to close the quarter.
