More than 100 Beaufort County student athletes will compete in a regional Special Olympics bowling tournament Friday.

Participants will showcase their bowling skills, and cheerleaders from local high schools will urge them on. The event will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Station 300 in Bluffton. The public is invited.

The event will include elementary, middle school and high school participants.

Other volunteers who will be at the event include representatives of the U.S. Marine Corps, the Knights of Columbus and the Lions Club.

"The excitement is certainly building," said Gregory McCord, the school district's chief student services officer.

The school district sponsors other Special Olympic events, including golf, basketball, tennis and equestrian tournaments.
