A fire that caused the evacuation of Whale Branch Elementary School for more than an hour Tuesday was started by a 7-year-old student, a Beaufort County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman said.

The fire, which started in a bathroom at the school at about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, led to the evacuation of the school while the Burton Fire District put out the fire and cleared smoke from the building.

The fire was deemed suspicious by investigators, who found that a 7-year-old student had started it, Sgt. Robin McIntosh said.

McIntosh would not say what the student used to start the fire or if the student will face charges. A damage estimate has not been determined, she said.
