South Carolina's fourth area code will be 854, the (Charleston) Post & Courier has reported.
The S.C. Office of Regulatory Staff reported the new number was revealed Monday by the North American Numbering Plan Administration.
The number will be applied as an overlay in the existing 843 area, meaning when 843 numbers are exhausted, people and businesses seeking new numbers will get 854 numbers. That is expected to begin happening sometime in the first half of 2015.
Dialing between the area codes, even if calling a number next door, will require all 10 digits.
The newspaper said the number was set aside to become South Carolina's next area code at least 10 years ago, but was kept under wraps because plans occasionally can change.
