A Bluffton couple were each charged with three counts of unlawful conduct toward a child Monday after police found them living in filthy conditions with three children, a Bluffton Police Department spokeswoman said.

Officers responded to the Simmonsville Road home of Benjamin Joseph Konchenderfer, 37, and Barbara Ann Owen, 42, around 11 p.m. Sunday following a complaint by the home's landlord, Capt. Angela McCall-Tanner said.

Officers found Konchenderfer, Owen, and their three children -- aged 15, 13, and 3 years old -- living in filthy conditions, McCall-Tanner said, with decaying food and feces infested with insects on the floor.

Konchenderfer and Owen were both charged with three counts of unlawful conduct toward a child and taken to the Beaufort County Detention Center, where they are both currently being held on $30,000 bond. Police turned over the three children to their grandmother, McCall-Tanner said.
