A former Beaufort High School star wrestler and football player has been charged with murder after one man was killed in a shooting Tuesday night at a Greenville apartment complex.

Clint Lewis Wright, 19, was charged with murder, burglary and possession of a weapon during a violent crime, according to warrants from the Greenville Police Department.

Wright and two other men attempted to rob an apartment at the Stonesthrow Apartments, leading to a shootout with the apartment's occupant, according to a news release from police.

Three men ran from the apartment, including Wright, who drove away and was arrested at a nearby hospital, a report said.

One of the other men who ran, Denzel Hayden, 21, of Greenville, was found dead on the sidewalk, according to The Associated Press.

The third man who ran from the apartment was arrested at the hospital after being treated for gunshot wounds. He has not been identified, Greenville police spokesman Johnathan Bragg said. A man was also found wounded inside the apartment, according to investigators.

Bragg said investigators found a large number of shell casings inside the apartment and checked other apartments to make sure no one was hit by bullets that went through the walls, according to FOX Carolina TV news station. Investigators are still trying to figure out who was involved in the incident and exactly how it unfolded.

Wright was a state champion wrestler for the Beaufort High Eagles, winning the 2013 Class 4-A 195-pound championship. He was also a first-team Island Packet and Beaufort Gazette All-Area linebacker for his senior season in 2012.

Wright was on the Greenville Tech Titans team, which helps prepare players for college-level football, said Beaufort High football coach Mark Clifford. Hayden also played for the Titans, according to FOX Carolina TV.

"It's a shocker," Clifford said. "I just hope he was in the wrong place at the wrong time and didn't know anything about it."

Beaufort High wrestling coach Bill Damude compared seeing the coverage of Wright's arrest and the shooting to getting "punched in the stomach."

"He's such a good kid," Damude said. "You've got to wait until the entire police investigation is finished to find out exactly what happened. I'm hoping for the best for him; that's all we can do."
