The city of Beaufort is looking to residents, organizations and businesses to landscape parts of the Spanish Moss Trail through an adopt-a-section program.

Among the groups that have already volunteered are Southern Palmetto Landscapes Inc. for the Westvine Drive Trailhead, the Beaufort Planning Group for the trail's intersection with Allision Road, and the Native Plant Society for the Rogers Drive intersections.

The program is a way for people to support the trail and community, city landscape architect Liza Hill said.

Participants agree to:

  • Visit the trail at least once a week during the season to remove litter and report maintenance or other problems
  • Trim around signs, fence posts, etc. after mowings
  • Clear trail of debris such as limbs, rocks, etc.
Optional activities include:

  • Weeding beds, planting annuals, fertilizing and watering the landscaped area
  • Installing birdhouses, bird feeders, pre-approved community bulletin boards, etc.
  • Adding landscaping, mulch, etc.
  • Edging trail and beds after mowings
  • Organizing volunteers to trim tree branches, repair erosion, seed and straw
Groups agree to adopt their sections for a year, and may put up a sign to let people know they agreed to take care of that area.

For information or to adopt a section, call 843-525-6348 or email lhill@cityofbeaufort.org.
