A Beaufort woman's condition was improving Saturday following the one-car collision in Savannah that left her husband dead.

The driver, 77-year-old Stuart Dean, was leaving the Savannah-Hilton Head International Airport shortly before 3:30 p.m. Thursday when he suddenly accelerated, left the road and struck a tree, according to the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department.

He and his wife were transported by ambulance to Memorial University Medical Center, where Stuart Dean was pronounce dead. Catherine Dean, 73, was listed in serious condition Saturday afternoon.

Reached Saturday, spokesman Julian Miller said police were still investigating a cause of the crash.
