The Beaufort Police Department is searching for a man suspected of trying to persuade two girls to get in his car Thursday afternoon.

A witness told officers she was in the 2300 block of Mossy Oaks Road at about 5:30 p.m. when she saw a white, late-1990s Chevy Suburban stop in the road alongside two girls, according to a news release. The driver, described as a heavyset white man in his late 30s to early 40s with light-brown hair, asked the girls if they wanted to go party with him, the release said.

The two girls ran to the witness, who called 911, but they left before officers arrived. Police have not been able to locate the girls, the release said.
