A Beaufort man was killed and his wife injured Thursday in a one-car crash at the Savannah-Hilton Head International Airport.

Stuart Dean, 77, was leaving the airport in a maroon Nissan Murano shortly before 3:30 p.m. when he accelerated, left the road and struck a tree, according to a Savannah-Chatham Metro Police Department news release. Dean was transported by ambulance to Memorial University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, the release said.

His wife, 73-year-old Catherine Dean, also was transported to the hospital. She was listed in critical condition Friday afternoon.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
