A man who drove into his girlfriend's car outside a St. Helena Island gas station Monday was seriously injured after his sport utility vehicle later rolled over about three miles from the gas station, according to a report from the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.

St. Helena resident Tyrone Chaplin, 43, crashed into his girlfriend's Honda Accord after she refused to buy him beer at the Exxon on Sea Island Parkway, where she works, the report said. She told deputies Chaplin was drunk when he entered the gas station at about 4:25 p.m., and she asked him to leave, touching off an argument.

A witness watched Chaplin leave the store, crash into the side of the parked Honda and drive away, the report said.

Soon after, Chaplin rolled his Ford Explorer near the intersection of Eddings Point Road and Pilot House Road. He was ejected from the SUV and seriously injured, the report said.

A deputy issued a summons to Chaplin in the Beaufort Memorial Hospital emergency room for property damage, but Chaplin fell asleep after he was read his Miranda rights, the report said.
