sports@islandpacket.comDecember 4, 2013

Freshman Kendall Smith sank three 3-pointers and scored 11 in the first quarter Tuesday night to push the Hilton Head Prep girls basketball team to an early 15-5 lead, and the Dolphins would go on to defeat Bible Baptist, 34-23, for their first victory in more than a year.

Hilton Head Prep shut down its girls basketball program last season after an 0-2 start when the team was decimated by injuries. Even this year, the Dolphins have a short bench. There are just eight players on the roster -- five freshmen and two sophomores.

Smith finished with 19 points to lead Hilton Head Prep (1-0). Maddie McDonald chipped in eight and Catherine Sheehan scored seven to close out the Dolphins' scoring.
