To update status, town of Bluffton amps up social media

The town of Bluffton is increasing its social media presence in hopes of connecting with residents.

In recent months, the town, the Bluffton Police Department and the Don Ryan Center for Innovation have created Twitter handles -- @TownofBluffton, @BlufftonPolice and @DonRyanCenter, respectively.

The police department also established a Facebook page: "Bluffton Police."

Town officials say such an online presence will enhance communication between the town and its citizens.

"We know the town needs to come to its residents versus the residents coming to the town," Mayor Lisa Sulka said. "Social media venues give us a way to directly communicate to those most affected by town projects, programs and events."

"It's definitely a way to enlarge the conversation," town spokeswoman Debbie Szpanka said.

Szpanka said the police department's Twitter handle will serve as an alert system in emergencies and provide opportunities for citizens to drop crime tips.

"So many municipalities are solving crimes this way," she added.

Szpanka and a few others will monitor the town's feed, while police officers and Don Ryan incubator director David Nelems will manage their respective handles, she said.
