Refuge to conduct controlled burns

The Savannah National Wildlife Refuge plans to conduct several controlled burns during the next two months.

Because of difficulties predicting weather, refuge staff cannot notify the public of the days burns will be conducted. However, owners of adjacent land and local fire departments are notified before fires are started, according to a news release.

The goal of controlled burning is to enhance wildlife habitat and reduce the risk of wildfires, the release said.
