A fire in the attic of a Spanish Wells Plantation home Monday started in the heating, ventilation and air-conditioning unit, a Hilton Head Island Fire & Rescue Division spokeswoman said.

Firefighters responded to McIntosh Road at 10:42 a.m. to find flames on one side of the house and heavy black smoke coming from the attic vent and garage, fire marshal Joheida Fister said. The fire was out at 12:12 p.m., Fister said.

Firefighters contained the fire to the attic, and it caused some structural damage to the home and to the heating and air unit. Fister said a preliminary estimate of the damage was $50,000.

No injuries were reported. The occupant had evacuated with multiple pets, Fister said.
