Beaufort County ministers to address crime, community problems

Seeking to raise awareness and address crime and other community problems in Burton, the Beaufort County Ministerial Alliance will have a community picnic Nov. 30.

The picnic will be from 12:30 to 5 p.m. at the Burton Wells Recreation Center on Middleton Recreation Drive, according to the Rev. Dr. Sam Spain, the alliance's president.

Spain, pastor of Lady's Island Baptist Church, said the idea for the picnic came from a meeting with area ministers and the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office on ways to stem crime in the Burton area. Spain said the ministers left the meeting with a plan to hold an event to raise awareness of all problems in the area, including unemployment.

"We and the people in the area know there is a problem with crime," he said. "We wanted to have the event as soon as possible, so it came together rather quickly. The ministers all pooled our resources with the goal of educating and helping the community."

In addition to the informational session and picnic, the event will include games and activities. Although the picnic is set for a holiday weekend, Spain is optimistic about turnout.

"We're prepared to feed 500 people, but we'll go to the store and get more food if we need to," he said.

Similar picnics could be held in different areas of the county, Spain said, particularly in Beaufort and on St. Helena Island.

"We're looking to spread goodwill, peace and harmony throughout all of our communities," he said. "People may think crime is just Grays Hill and Burton's problem, but crime has no permanent home."
