The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office is searching for a man who fled into the woods on St. Helena Island at midday Saturday, leaving a pistol behind.

The Sheriff's Office responded about 11:15 a.m. to a report of shots fired near Seaside Road and Everest Lane, according to Capt. Mark Mattox. Officers approached a black male who then ran into the woods after tossing the gun and a backpack whose contents are being tested to determine if they are drugs, Mattox said.

No one was injured in the incident. The suspect remains at large.
