A Georgia man was killed and another man injured Tuesday night when their car crashed into a tractor-trailer on U.S. 278 in greater Bluffton, authorities said.

Brian Howard Cox, 33, of White, Ga., was pronounced dead at the scene at about 9:45 p.m., according to Beaufort County Coroner Ed Allen.

The Mustang in which Cox was a passenger was headed west on U.S. 278 when it struck a tractor-trailer making a U-turn near the Kroger's on Towne Drive, according to the Bluffton Police Department.

After the accident, both lanes of U.S. 278 were closed for a helicopter landing, according to Capt. Randy Hunter of the Bluffton Township Fire District.

The driver of the car was flown by LifeStar Air Ambulance to Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah, Allen said. His condition was not available Wednesday.

The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured, police Lt. Joe Babkiewicz said.

The Bluffton Police Department asked the S.C. Highway Patrol to investigate, police Capt. Angela McCall-Tanner said. No additional information was available, she said.
