Trash transfer station is an ecological concern

info@islandpacket.comNovember 19, 2013

I take exception to the Nov. 6 article stating that residents of the Chechessee area and surrounding developments have told the Beaufort County Council that "they do not want a trash transfer station near their property."

Of course, no one wants a trash station in his or her back yard, but over the last five council meetings, none of the numerous speakers ever mentioned the "NIMBY" subject -- Not In My Backyard. Instead, they expressed their concern about the ecological impact of a trash station in an area protected by the Beaufort County Rural and Critical Land Preservation Program.

The editorial on Nov. 8 gave a much more realistic view of the problem facing Beaufort County Council. It advocated more transparency and better information to the public as to how this site was selected and purchased without any public hearing.

Meanwhile, the kickoff for the Port Royal Sound Foundation's Maritime Center took place at Lemon Island on Nov. 9, attended by almost 200 residents from Beaufort County, including Beaufort Mayor Billy Keyserling, Beaufort County Council member Stu Roman. Also present was Geoffrey Scott of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Chris Marsh of the Lowcountry Institute, and several other prominent figures------. They confirmed their strong support for the creation of an educational maritime facility with the mission "to advance the awareness of Port Royal Sound and its contributions to the environmental, cultural, and economic well-being of our area." A trash transfer station does not fit into the close vicinity of such an ecological domain.
