A woman was charged Thursday with breach of trust after she allegedly used the Ridgeland-Hardeeville High School athletic booster club's credit card to pay her personal bills.

Jennifer Marie Smith, 38, of Varnville paid her electric and phone bills with the card, the Ridgeland Police Department said.

A club member notified Ridgeland police Nov. 8 after discovering charges on the bank statement for Palmetto Electric and CenturyLink, a news release said. Investigators identified Smith, a booster club parent who works concessions and other events, after tracking her transaction with Palmetto Electric, the release said.

Smith was taken to the Jasper County Detention Center, the release said.

"The district will have no comment about the internal affairs of the booster club," said Shellie Murdaugh, spokeswoman for the Jasper County School District in a release. "The booster club is a benefactor of the school but is not part of the school or the district."
