Fifteen utility trailers have been stolen from around Beaufort, Burton and Lady's Island in the past two months.

Also, an attempt to steal a trailer was reported Sept. 23, when a witness told deputies he saw a small SUV pulling a neighbor's trailer. The trailer broke away from the SUV as the vehicle turned onto Shanklin Road, and the SUV drove away. The trailer was recovered, but no suspects were identified, according to a news release.

To prevent trailer thefts, the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office suggests

  • parking trailers with their hitches against a building or in an area not easily accessible to vehicles;
  • making the wheels inoperable; chaining trailers to a tree or fixed object; and
  • using hitch pin or ball locks on the trailer hitch. Parking a trailer in a locked area also offers some protection.

Trailer owners should photograph their trailers and record their make, model and serial number so investigators can more easily identify them.

Anyone with information about the thefts can call S.C. Crime Stoppers at 888-274-6372.
