DOT is passing the buck on traffic circle changes

info@islandpacket.comNovember 13, 2013

The response given by an engineer with the S.C. Department of Transportation in a recent article regarding residents' desire to improve the Bluffton Parkway traffic circle is appalling. He is attempting to scare Beaufort County residents by discussing the cost of the much needed changes. If someone designed this circle correctly in the first place, no changes would be needed now. Anyone who sees the Sea Pines and Coligny Circle traffic roundabouts can appreciate how well a properly designed traffic circle can function. SCDOT can add all the road markings and signs they want. However, as long as anyone has the option of leaving the circle from the inside lane, there will be accidents. It seems so easy and inexpensive to simply close the inside lane with traffic cones until permanent changes can be made. Something must happen now, not later.
