Local Golf Notebook, Nov. 7: Hilton Head's Mancil wins in Cheraw

Hilton Head Island's Travis Mancil birdied the par-5 second hole at Cheraw State Park to win a playoff Sunday with Columbia's Jack Parrott and claim the Boys 13-14 title at the 19th annual SCJGA Cheraw Fall Challenge.

Mancil and Parrott shot a two-day total off 3-over-par 149 to force the playoff.

Bluffton's Drew Weary was third, a shot back at 150, while Beaufort's Matthew Campbell was fifth at 153.

Hilton Head Island's Will Miles tied for sixth at 3-under-par 143 in the Boys 15-18 division. Bluffton's Bryson Nimmer, a Hilton Head Christian standout and recent Clemson commitment, tied for 12th at even-par 146.

Bluffton's Kasidy Beckel was the top area finisher in the Girls 14-18 division. She shot 12-over-par 155 to finish 14 shots off the lead.

In the Boys 10-12 division, Hilton Head Island's Daniel Azallion was sixth with a 74, five strokes off the lead. Beaufort's Jerry Bruns shot 81 to finish second, six strokes back, in the Boys 8-9 division.


The inaugural Hilton Head Island Golf and Tennis Festival will be held Feb. 27 to March 2, 2014 at several venues including The Westin Hilton Head Island Resort and Spa, Port Royal Golf and Racquet Club and the Sea Pines Resort.

The golf centerpiece of the event will be the Hilton Head Cup Pro-Am on Feb. 28 and March 1.

The event will Pro-Am will pair PGA professionals from the PGA Carolinas section, Georgia and Florida with area golfers. There will be 24 teams consisting of a pro and three amateurs.

  • Paul Klasing hit a hole-in-one Oct. 23 on the third hole at Wexford Plantation's Arnold Palmer Signature Course. He used an 8-iron. Witnesses were Jim Queen, Mike Nash, and Clay Graham.

  • Bruce Campbell hit a hole-in-one Nov. 1 on the third hole at Okatie Creek Golf Club. He used a pitching wedge. Witnesses were Don Clifton, Wade Goins, and Neal Thompson.
