Two people were killed in a two-car crash Wednesday afternoon near the Back River Bridge on U.S. 17 in South Carolina.

The Hardeeville Fire Department and several other agencies responded about 5:30 p.m. to the crash scene, according to Capt. Ronny Roberson of the fire department. A driver traveling north on U.S. 17 had crossed into the southbound lane and struck another vehicle head-on, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol, which will handle the crash investigation.

Both drivers, who were wearing seat belts at the time of the wreck, had to be extricated from their cars, Roberson said.

One of those victims died at the scene as a result of their injuries, according to the Highway Patrol. The other victim was flown by LifeStar Air Ambulance to Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah. The victim was pronounced dead there.

Jasper County Coroner Martin Sauls would not provide further information late Wednesday, including the names of the victims, pending notification of family members.
