Hilton Head High tops Lower State cross country meet

State meet next weekend

The Hilton Head Island High School cross country teams showed their stuff ahead of next weekend's Class 3-A state finals, winning the boys' and girls' team crowns at Saturday's Lower State qualifier at Sandhills in Columbia.

The Seahawks were paced in the boys race by overall winner Cisco Ferre, who led the pack in 16 minutes, 7.45 seconds. Second for the Seahawks and fourth overall was Ben Gilman.

The Hilton Head High girls also dominated, placing five within the top 11 finishers. Mallory Leggett led the way in sixth overall in 20:07.07, and Carley McGlinn was seventh in 20:08.49.

Hilton Head High Boys (1st place) -- 1. Cisco Ferre 16:07.45, 4. Ben Gilman 16:58.17, 6. Sam Beattie, 17:12.50, 7. Eladio Wilkinson 17:12.99, 10. Phillip Evans 17:22.34

Hilton Head High girls (1st place) -- 6. Mallory Leggett 20:07.70, 7. Carley McGlinn 20:08.49, 9. Ciara McMahon 20:18.28, 10. Abby Gross 20:23.91, 11. Rebeka Parent 20:28.57.


Bluffton High School finished fifth in the boys and girls events, and the Beaufort High School boys placed sixth to advance to next weekend's state finals.

Evans Beach led the Bobcats in the boys race with a 16:56.11 finish that was good for eighth overall. Lea Tierney finished eighth in 19:58.53 to lead the Bluffton girls.

Team titles went to the Wando boys and Summerville girls.

Beaufort High Boys (6th place) -- 4. Brandon Pratt 16:47.44, 31. Andrew McDaniel 17:56.54, 41. Christopher Bacon 18:29.80, 42. Brahm Gideon 18:23.69, 45. Jordan Burnsed 18:43.73.

Beaufort High Girls -- 63. Siobhan Murphy 24:14.14, 81. Ashyln Houston 27:34.03


Erik Barbosa ran to an eighth-place finish, helping the Battery Creek boys take seventh place in the team standings and qualify for next weekend's state meet.

Waccamaw finished first in both the boys and girls team standings. The Lower State meet was held at Sandhills in Columbia, which also will be the site for the state meet.
