Monts, Gnann win JY15 sailing event in Connecticut

Local sailors Will Monts and Walter Gnann recently won the 2013 JY15 North American Junior Championship held Oct. 25 through Oct. 27 in Stamford, Conn.

The competition, held at the Stamford Yacht Club, featured one-design centerboard dinghy JY15 class boats from across North America. Monts, of Hilton Head Island, skippered the boat, while Gnann, of Beaufort, crewed.

The fleet faced difficult conditions in the Long Island Sound with high seas and winds approaching 30 knots, but race organizers managed to conduct 12 races throughout the three-day regatta.

Monts and Gnann, ages 16 and 14 respectively, also finished with the top junior score in the 2012 JY15 North Americans held last November in Beaufort.
