BASKETBALL

YOUTH WINTER BASKETBALL LEAGUE: Who: Boys, ages 6-16; When: Games begin Jan. 10; Where: Hilton Head Island Recreation Center; Cost: $85 (includes jersey, team picture); Registration deadline: Nov. 18; Notes: All players ages 8-16 must attend placement on Nov. 9 or Nov. 16 -- Boys 8-9 from 9-10 a.m., Boys 10-11 from 11 a.m. to noon, Boys 12-13 from 1-2 p.m., Boys 14-16 from 2-3 p.m.; There will also be a placement for all ages from 6-7 p.m. on Nov. 12. GIRLS TRAINING PROGRAM: Who: Girls, grades 3-8; When: Tuesdays and Saturdays, starting Dec. 7; Where: Hilton Head Island Recreation Center; Cost: $50; Registration deadline: Nov. 23; Notes: Former Hilton Head High basketball player Kendra Franklin will lead the program, which teaches girls the fundamentals of the game. BEAUFORT COUNTY PALS

PALS AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM: What: Registration for Beaufort County Parks and Leisure Services After-School Program; Where: Bluffton center, Burton Wells, Broomfield, Port Royal, Scott Center and Lind Brown; Notes: Registrations will be accepted until each center is full. FISHING

BEAUFORT SPORTFISHING AND DIVING CLUB MEETING: When: Nov. 14; Where: Beaufort Yacht and Sailing Club, Lady's Island; Time: Social at 6:30 p.m., meeting at 7 p.m.; Notes: Marine biologist Phil Maier, a 20-year veteran of the DNR, will be the guest speaker. He directs DNR outreach and education programs along the coast, including the ACE Basin National Estuarine Research Reserve and Coastal Carolina Discovery program. No reservations are needed. GOLF

FRIENDS OF CALLAWASSIE CHARITY TOURNAMENT: When: 9:30 a.m., Nov. 4; Where: Callawassie Island Club; Format: Two-person, modified Pinehurst; Cost: $135 per player; Notes: Friends of Callawassie Island (FOCI) has raised nearly $400,000 for more than 80 local charities and organizations in the Lowcountry since 2001. Field will be limited to 60 two-person teams. Awards luncheon to follow play. "BE A SAINT" GOLF CLASSIC: What: Tournament to benefit the free prenatal services offered by the Pregnancy Center & Clinic of the Low Country; Where: Hampton Hall Golf Club, Bluffton; When: 9:30 a.m., Nov. 4; Cost: $150; Notes: Separate flights for men, women and mixed teams. Contests and prizes, including $10,000 cash hole-in-one contest. Tournament gift, breakfast sandwich, luncheon buffet, refreshments and snacks. BIRDIES FOR THE BRAVE CHARITY TOURNAMENT AND GALA: When: 12:30 p.m., Nov. 8; Where: Palmetto Hall Plantation Club; Format: 4-person team, plus military hero; scramble; Cost: $135 per person, $500 per foursome; Registration: Forms can be picked up at Port Royal, Shipyard, Oyster Reef or Palmetto Hall golf shops. Notes: Each foursome will be joined by a military hero. Hors d'oeuvres and awards following play. Sponsorships available. Donations and net proceeds go to various military homefront groups through the PGA Tour Charities, Inc., Birdies for the Brave program. BEAUFORT HIGH ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT TOURNAMENT: Where: Ocean Creek Golf Course, Fripp Island; When: 9:30 a.m., Nov. 9; Cost: $100 per person, $400 per team; Notes: Outboard motor boat hole-in-one prize. Sponsorships, donations or door prizes are welcomed. Each participant gets a T-shirt, gift bag and a box lunch. All proceeds go directly to the Beaufort High athletics department to help fund equipment replacement. NOTRE DAME CLUB OUTING: What: 16th annual event to raise funds for the Notre Dame Club's local scholarship fund; When: Nov. 19, 12:30 p.m.; Where: Sea Pines Country Club, Hilton Head Island; Format: Four-person, best-ball scramble; Cost: $140 per player ($125 per player for couples), $50 for dinner only; Notes: Contests and prizes. HOSPITAL AUXILIARY INVITATIONAL: What: 27th annual Hospital Auxiliary Invitational presented by the Corkern Group; When: Dec. 2-3; Where: Harbour Town Golf Links and Wexford Golf Club, Hilton Head Island; Cost: $250 per player; Notes: Cost includes prizes, lunch each day and an awards ceremony. Net proceeds benefit the Auxiliary at Hilton Head Hospital and will be used to provide medical and nursing scholarships, and prescription medicine for those in need. LACROSSE

LAX DOG BOYS LACROSSE: What: Skills, drills and casual games; Who: Grades 3-8; Where: Hilton Head Island Rec Center; When: Nov. 5 to Dec. 16; Times: Tuesdays, 5:30-6:45 p.m. (Grades 3-5) and 6:45-8 p.m. (Grades 6-8); Cost: $60 (includes T-shirt); Equipment rental available for $35; Notes: Hilton Head High boys lacrosse coach John Werner will be the lead instructor. All skill levels welcome. Players must have NOSCAE-approved helmet in white, lacrosse gloves, lacrosse elbow pads, lacrosse shoulder pads, stick, cleats, and mouth guard. Scholarships available. MISCELLANEOUS

BEFORE-SCHOOL AND AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAMS: When: Monday through Friday (regularly scheduled public school days); Where: Hilton Head Island Recreation Center; Notes: Programs combine play with academics. Children in the afterschool program receive homework assistance. Programs focus on youth development, academic success, friendship and character-building. Before-school program children will be walked over to school. There is a registration fee of $30 per child or $50 per family each year. Completed registration forms must be turned in to Rec Center before your child can attend the program. Financial assistance is available to those in need. ROLLER HOCKEY

Notes: Demonstrate your skills in front of the USC Beaufort coaching staff. Morning session will focus on fundamentals, while afternoon session will be in showcase format. You will be responsible for providing your own lunch. Cancellations before Nov. 11 will receive a $50 refund. No refunds after Nov. 11. SAND SHARK SOFTBALL YOUTH SKILLS CAMP: Who: Players ages 8-12; When: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Nov. 17; Where: Richard Gray Sports Complex, Hardeeville; Cost: $80 before Nov. 11 ($105 for late registration and walk-ups). Notes: Camp will teach players the fundamentals of the game as instructed by the USC Beaufort coaching staff. Morning session will concentrate on defensive skills, while afternoon session will concentrate on the offensive side of the game. Base running, proper throwing mechanics and other aspects of the game will be included. You will be responsible for providing your own lunch. Cancellations before Nov. 11 will receive a $40 refund.
