Hilton Head has no sway in airlines' decisions

info@islandpacket.comNovember 3, 2013

The Island Packet has been reporting on commercial air service at Hilton Head Island Airport for 30-plus years. If anyone still feels an individual destination like ours has any influence on route decisions, he/she has not been paying attention.

Bucking convention would be holding on to the fantasy that our community can influence the decision to start commercial air service. Anyone can conduct a survey or provide examples to prove a position or belief. The reality is macro considerations related to corporate strategic plans decide route service.

The Hilton Head airport is a wonderful facility. We are fortunate to have it. Additionally, we should be thankful for the joint efforts of Hilton Head and Savannah business leaders who established and maintained a positive relationship with JetBlue. Discontinued service by two other carriers presented JetBlue an opportunity to grow -- and to include the Savannah-Hilton Head International Airport in its new routes. Because of the ongoing relationship with our region, getting this new service was easier, and everyone benefits.
