Alexa Muffley

The Sun Conference named USC Beaufort junior Alexa Muffley its Defensive Player of the Week for women's soccer on Monday after voting by the league's sports information directors.

Muffley, a midfielder from Jacksonville, Fla., was a dominant force in the middle of the park in the Sand Sharks' wins over Southeastern (1-0) and Ave Maria (5-1), helping USCB finish the regular season on a school-record five-game winning streak and clinch a home match in the quarterfinals of the conference tournament.

She also scored two goals against Ave Maria, bringing her season totals to seven goals and 16 points -- both single-season school records.

"Alexa played out of her mind this week and won nearly every ball in the midfield," USCB coach Ed Heberling said in a release. "She is so effective in the air with her athleticism, size and strength that many players cannot compete."

Muffley is the second consecutive USCB player to win the award after goalkeeper Chelsie Mummert earned the honor last week.

The Sand Sharks will host rival SCAD Savannah in the Sun Conference Tournament quarterfinals at 3 p.m. on Nov. 7 at Fin Land Field. USCB hopes to "Flood Fin Land" and set an attendance record for the program's three-year history.
