Hilton Head lecture series kicks off

Gov. Nikki Haley gave the opening address Thursday at the Hilton Head Island Institute's inaugural ImagiNATION event.

The three-day lecture and panel series aims to raise the island's profile as a hub for intellectual thought and new ideas.

Speakers include: former Facebook marketing head Randi Zuckerberg, sister of founder Mark Zuckerberg; education expert Tony Wagner; Richard Resnick, CEO of GenomeQuest, a company that builds software to support genome processing; and Marc Watson, chief creative officer of TEQGames at Universal Studios.

"People have already known Hilton Head Island for a great vacation spot," Haley told a crowd of about 250 at the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina. "... But an event like this shows it's much more than just golf. Much more than just tennis. The intellectual stimulation that you will have over the next three days shows that South Carolina is on the move because we very much care about where our communities are going, where our state is going and where our country is going."
